Fewer Carbs Lower Blood Pressure

sandwich
A low-carb diet can fight fat. Eating fewer carbohydratess can also lower your blood pressure — and it can be even more effective than weight loss drugs.

This new research from Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Duke University Medical Center demonstrates that it's very possible to get the same results without weight loss drugs, and without risk of potential side effects or extra cost.

The news also comes as a major benefit to those with hypertension that are trying to shed pounds. 146 overweight individuals involved in the study were broken into two groups: one that followed a low-carb diet and another that took orlistat while on a low-fat diet. 47% in the low-carb group had their blood pressure medication decreased or discontinued, while 21% of the low-fat, orlistat group had to reduce their medication.

Birth Control and Weight Loss

weight loss pill
For many years "the pill" has been blamed for weight gain in women, causing many to forego taking that particular method of birth control, but recent research has shown it is not the culprit.

The birth control pill is an effective hormonal method of contraception, and has often been seen as the cause of weight gain. However, clinical trials have found there is no causal link between birth control and weight gain, especially considering that women gain weight as they age -- whether they take birth control or not. In fact, choosing not to take the pill doesn't necessarily help women control their weight either.

There are no quick fixes to shedding pounds, but leading a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a well-balanced diet is still the number one way to lose weight the healthy way.

FDA warns against non prescription weight loss pills

The FDA is warning people against taking 28 types of weight loss pills. The tainted products contain potentially dangerous undeclared ingredients, the Food and Drug Administration found, including prescription drugs in levels much higher than the maximum recommended dosage:

The brands are Fatloss Slimming, 2 Day Diet, 3x Slimming Power, Japan Lingzhi 24 Hours Diet, 5x Imelda Perfect Slimming, 3 Day Diet, 7 Day Herbal Slim, 8 Factor Diet, 7 Diet Day/Night Formula, 999 Fitness Essence, Extrim Plus, GMP, Imelda Perfect Slim, Lida DaiDaihua, Miaozi Slim Capsules, Perfect Slim, Perfect Slim 5x, Phyto Shape, ProSlim Plus, Royal Slimming Formula, Slim 3 in 1, Slim Express 360, Slimtech, Somotrim, Superslim, TripleSlim, Zhen de Shou and Venom Hyperdrive 3.0.

Many of the products are marketed as "dietary supplements" and claim to be "natural" or contain only "herbal" ingredients. But the FDA said some of the pills include sibutramine, a controlled substance; rimonabant, a drug not approved for marketing in the U.S.; phenytoin, an anti-seizure medication; and phenolphthalein, a suspected carcinogen.

Many of these products contain medication or chemicals that may raise your blood pressure in the very list and may kill you at the most. Even more a lot of these products (maybe all) have no scientific bases that they actually work.

All the medications that we dispense at our Medical weight loss center are FDA (government) approved and fully endorsed by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians and the American Board of Bariatric Medicine.

The Best and the Worst Choices in Food

Nutrition Action named their best selections for what they consider the healthiest and worst options in food choices. They named some bad choices like “Starbucks on Steroids,” “Artery Crust” and “Angioplasta.” It never ceases to amaze me how food manufacturers can make such ordinary food so bad for you. The calories, fats, carbs and sodium are real killers to any diet plan.

View some of our suggested recipes for success, and find healthy calorie food items on our New York Weight Loss Center website.

FDA Tells Consumers to Stop Hydroxycut Use

The FDA is now warning consumers to stop using several Hydroxycut products because of their connection to serious liver problems. Iovate Health Sciences, the company that distributes the products, has agreed to remove them from the market.

Health problems reportedly due to Hydroxycut product use include jaundice, elevated liver enzymes, liver damage requiring a liver transplant, seizures, cardiovascular disorders and muscle damage, and they have also been linked to one person's death as a result of liver failure.

The 14 Hydroxcut products being recalled by the FDA include:

Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
Hydroxycut 24
Hydroxycut Carb Control
Hydroxycut Natural

Ano Lobb, a public health researcher who was quoted in an AP article by Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, has studied the effects of Hydroxycut and other dietary supplements and believes that the ingredient hydroxycitric acid may be to blame, which has previously been linked to liver problems in at least one other medical journal study. Lobb also warns that there are probably many other dietary supplements still on the market that contain that same potentially dangerous ingredient.

Hydroxycut products are marketed as dietary supplements that assist weight loss, fat burning, energy and water loss. Anyone experiencing side effects from Hydroxycut products is asked to report them to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
