New Obesity Health Risk

Researchers recently uncovered a reason why obese people have a higher risk for health complications -- a protein called pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) that is secreted by fat cells.

Research on mice shows that if some of PEDF's action are blocked, it may reverse some complications for obese individuals and also opens up new drug opportunities.

PEDF is produced by fat cells in overweight people with higher levels of protein in the bloodstream. The protein can trigger insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes in the bloodstream and liver and also increases risk for heart disease.

However, tests on the obese lab mice found that treatments that blocked PEDF's action resulted in lowering blood fat level and reversed some of their insulin resistance. As the mice lost weight, their PEDF levels fell. --BBC News

Association between Obesity and Colon Cancer

Researchers from Michigan State University and Oakland University in Rochester, MI, discovered how leptin, a fat cell-derived hormone, may aid in the progression of colon cancer….The results appear in a paper called Novel Mechanism for Obesity-induced Colon Cancer Progression published in Carcinogenesis….Cells from the mice that carried the Apc mutation when stimulated with leptin produced significantly more vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) than the cells from the other mouse model, according to the investigators….These cells also had higher HUVEC cell proliferation, chemotaxis, upregulation of adhesion proteins, and cell-signaling activation resulting in nuclear factor kappa B nuclear translocation and DNA binding due to VEGF…. — GEN News

FDA warns against non prescription weight loss pills

The FDA is warning people against taking 28 types of weight loss pills. The tainted products contain potentially dangerous undeclared ingredients, the Food and Drug Administration found, including prescription drugs in levels much higher than the maximum recommended dosage:

The brands are Fatloss Slimming, 2 Day Diet, 3x Slimming Power, Japan Lingzhi 24 Hours Diet, 5x Imelda Perfect Slimming, 3 Day Diet, 7 Day Herbal Slim, 8 Factor Diet, 7 Diet Day/Night Formula, 999 Fitness Essence, Extrim Plus, GMP, Imelda Perfect Slim, Lida DaiDaihua, Miaozi Slim Capsules, Perfect Slim, Perfect Slim 5x, Phyto Shape, ProSlim Plus, Royal Slimming Formula, Slim 3 in 1, Slim Express 360, Slimtech, Somotrim, Superslim, TripleSlim, Zhen de Shou and Venom Hyperdrive 3.0.

Many of the products are marketed as "dietary supplements" and claim to be "natural" or contain only "herbal" ingredients. But the FDA said some of the pills include sibutramine, a controlled substance; rimonabant, a drug not approved for marketing in the U.S.; phenytoin, an anti-seizure medication; and phenolphthalein, a suspected carcinogen.

Many of these products contain medication or chemicals that may raise your blood pressure in the very list and may kill you at the most. Even more a lot of these products (maybe all) have no scientific bases that they actually work.

All the medications that we dispense at our Medical weight loss center are FDA (government) approved and fully endorsed by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians and the American Board of Bariatric Medicine.

Virus May Cause Obesity

There is accumulating evidence that certain viruses may cause obesity, in essence making obesity contagious, according to Leah D. Whigham, the lead researcher in a new study, “Adipogenic Potential of Multiple Human Adenoviruses In Vivo and In Vitro in Animals,” in the January issue of the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology published by the American Physiological Society.

Weight Loss Linked to Reduced Incontinence

drink water
The New England Journal of Medicine earlier this year published a new study showing the connection between losing weight and incontinence relief.

The clinical trial, which was cited in a New York Times article by Roni Caryn Rabin, of 338 overweight and obese women with incontinence problems who took in a six-month weight loss program discovered that they experienced half the amount of leakage incidents compared to before the program.

The women, who lost an average of 17 pounds, experienced a 47 percent reduction in the number of weekly incontinence episodes, compared to women in the control group, whose weekly episodes dropped by 28 percent, the study found. The women in the comparison group didn't participate in a weight loss program but attended four educational sessions that included information about weight loss, physical activity and healthy eating.

“The really lovely thing about this is not only can women treat their incontinence, but there are a myriad of other healthy benefits like improved blood pressure control, lipids, sleep, libido," said Dr. Leslee L. Subak, first author of the paper and an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco.

“Weight loss should be a first-line recommendation for urinary incontinence," she added.

The study supported the hypothesis that excess weight puts extra pressure on the bladder and pelvic floor, and that a loss in weight will put less pressure on the bladder, Dr. Subak told the New York Times.

Losing Weight is a Step Toward a Healthier Lifestyle

Feature Article

With the spotlight on childhood obesity, many families and schools are trying to address overweight and obesity as school begins. I have heard lots of chatter about what people are planning to do, and I want to share some pointers from recent research and clinical experience.
  1. Assess what you eat and drink.
A simple way to do this is to write down everything that you eat or drink for a few days. Look at the list and attack the sources of empty calories. The likely offenders are sweet tea, sugared soda, bread, french fries and chips. Dietitians and weight loss programs also recommend writing down what you eat because it makes you think twice before eating.

  2. Eliminate junk food.
Eliminating junk food may be all that you need to do if you are drinking regular soda, and are eating “nabs” and potato chips. I often hear, “But I don’t eat much of it.” However, the unwelcome truth is that just a little sugar and starch can turn off your body’s ability to lose weight. Some people, I fear, are very sensitive to sugar, and need to get it out of their lives completely.

  3. Follow a program.
Lifestyle programs use many different approaches. It is okay to count calories, fat grams or carbohydrate grams to achieve a healthier lifestyle. Other preferences may lead you toward vegetarian or meat-based approaches. Internet support groups, diet books, packaged food programs and work-site groups can all help. (I don’t know of any legitimate lifestyle program that promotes eating “junk food.”)

  4. Seek help if you take medication, or if you can’t do it on your own.
Some patients tell me that changing what they eat is difficult, even “the hardest thing that that they’ve ever done.” Under medical supervision, medications and “prescription-strength” diets may be necessary to overcome hunger. If you have medical problems like diabetes or high blood pressure, these conditions need to be monitored if you are making a major change in your diet.

  5. Have your health measurements checked periodically.
While there are many recommendations for “healthy eating,” you cannot know what foods are best for you unless you have certain tests checked by your doctor. I see people who are frustrated because even though they are doing everything that they have been told for general healthiness, they look and feel unhealthy. In many instances, the “general recommendations” are not appropriate for individual people.

I have seen “lifestyle therapy” improve or eliminate type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, sleep apnea, asthma and many other health problems that are so common today. Losing weight is just one step toward a healthier lifestyle.
